The University of East Anglia’s The Enterprise Centre was praised by judges for being a showcase of low carbon and sustainable design at its best. Judges commented that the workplace offered a wide range of highly flexible accommodation with incubation and collaborative spaces for new and developing businesses in a building equipped to deliver for the 21st century.

The judges were impressed by the building’s achievement of ‘Outstanding’ Passivhaus and BREEAM standards and commented that it has pushed boundaries in almost every way possible. The involvement of local tradespeople, the local sourcing of materials and the extensive use of recycled materials means the judges felt this building is something Norfolk as a community can be truly proud of.

Captivated by the fantastic facilities housed in its headquarter building, the BCO judges were most impressed by the fact Aker Solutions had created an enjoyable workplace for its over 3,000 employees. By introducing a wide range of catering and retail options, an onsite nursery and multiple fitness facilities including a gym, squash court and sports hall, staff have confirmed a high level of satisfaction with the new building. The building also excelled in its environmental credentials, achieving a BREEAM Excellent and EPC A rating.

The Hiscox Building, Peasholme Green, York 

Judges were impressed by the Hiscox building and its sensitivity to the iconic cityscape – reinvigorating the community whilst recognising its heritage. A thoughtful design, the building features a wide staircase that reflects the City Wall details and in turn connects each employee back to York. Simple artwork also adorns the space, depicting the company’s business and heritage.

Standing at 13 stories tall, across 240,000 square feet, judges praised the building for making a striking architectural statement in the heart of the city. Inside, the company has worked collaboratively with designers and developers to create a light and spacious working space that reflects the needs of its 3,000 workers. The judges were also impressed by how Ty Admiral had considered their staff’s social needs – incorporating cafes, restaurants, retail spaces and a ‘get-ready room’ within the innovative development.
