Berghaus HQ, Sunderland Enterprise Park, 12 Colima Avenue, Sunderland

This project exemplifies what can be achieved with the creative re-use of an existing building and its spaces. This major rejuvenation of Berghaus' showroom headquarters has created an inspirational new workplace which reflects the brand's ethos of ‘Live for Adventure’.

The success of the project has also allowed this dedicated local employer to remain in its existing location so it can continue to boost the economic prospects of of the area.

The project team refused to be hindered or restricted by the rather bland and a-typical out of town period office building which was their canvas. Their skills and enthusiasm proved instrumental in the dramatic and cost effective transformation of the dated workplace into a modern working environment which the leading design brand can be proud of.

The new headquarters fosters a creative, more openly communicative environment which stimulates staff and makes the business more effective.

Few new developments can so successfully have exhibited such a strong understanding of the the occupier's culture and aspirations as this. The Berghaus brand is weaved into the fabric of the building in a stimulating and fun, yet professional manner. This goes further than using the company’s corporate colour scheme or replicating the logo in the carpet.

The DNA of the adventure company has been translated into an effective, efficient and inspiring environment. Solutions such as the sky rail, the climbing rope staircase and the timber baffles fixed with clevis bringing the excitement of outdoor adventure into the workplace, so that the brand is more than just a logo, but a culture.

The fit out took advantage of the relocation of workspaces towards the rear of the building, offices. The flexibility of the workplace is enhanced by providing break-out spaces which have been created as a result of relocating products from storage rooms to the high level sky rail.

Berghaus' admirable decision to remain in its location and to breathe new life into an unloved building has proved inspirational. The new business space not only supports the staff but promotes perfectly the culture and excitement of 'living for adventure'.

Whitespace, Norloch House, 36 King's Stables Road, Edinburgh

Whitespace briefed its designers HKSD to create a light industrial ‘think tank’ which allowed staff the freedom to work effectively in a variety of scenarios, via agile working on each floor. The introduction of meeting pods, games areas, its Foundry Bar, interactive LED walls and even a secret ‘Georgian Drawing Room’ were also designed to promote free thinking and creativity amongst Whitespace employees. The judges were equally impressed with the agency’s commitment to source as many of the materials needed for the refurbishment from the local region as possible. The excellent environmental credentials of Norloch House was also praised, achieving an EPC ‘C’ rating which takes into account the offices’ energy efficient lighting and energy consumption.
