Award Winners Tour – Tanfield, Edinburgh
This former Standard Life administrative centre, sited between the Water of Leith and the Royal Botanic Gardens was brought into commission in 1991, but became redundant only a matter of 15 years later. With its innovative but highly bespoke layout, designed around the needs of its original owner occupier, this has been a mammouth task to adapt the building to suit a multi-occupancy brief.
The development team set out to carve a new street through the centre of the building, employing an elongated light well to bring much need natural light into the centre of the building plus a generous galleried route to gain access to a range of office suites. A new top floor of office space opens onto the building’s hidden gem, a restored rooftop garden.
Improvements to the energy efficiency of the building were achieved by introducing imaginative, but simple automatically controlled lighting systems.
