BCO Awards Technical Tour – 10 Queen Street Place, London
Originally designed in the era of the 1986 "Big Bang", 10 Queen Street Place, formerly known as Thames Exchange was designed for the large dealing floors of that time and became obsolete within a decade of the building’s completion in 1991.
The building was sold to The Blackstone Group International and John Robertson Architects was commissioned in 2000 to prepare refurbishment proposals to show how the interior of the building could be completely reconfigured to transform it into a flexible and modern office environment.
To provide maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness, JRA designed modular atria which were inserted into the floorplate making office depths of 16, 18, and 20m, allowing optimum flexibility in confirguration. A central atrium becomes the central core to draw people in from the new entrance.
Relocating all the plant into the basement and making it work harder frees up half a floor on the roof for an extra 2,000sqm of office space. The other part of the roof becomes a garden so occupants can for the first time enjoy the riverside location in central London.
The office fit out by HOK provides open place law offices promoting collaborative work among practice groups. Prime perimeter areas are reserved as generously appointed public breakout spaces whilst private offices are fronted by cellular glass.
