The BCO's membership is drawn from those who occupy office space, and those professional organisations and people who design, build, and manage office space in the UK. Over the past five years our membership base has significantly expanded, rising to over 1,000 companies and individuals.
All of our members including architects, agents, facilities managers, property managers, fit out specialists, occupiers, or planners, have a strong interest in developing and managing better office buildings - offices that are more sustainable, and working spaces that provide more productive environments for all those who work within them.
Acting as a forum and think pad for people to come together, network and exchange ideas, debate key issues, and visit examples of good practice and innovative design, is the leading role which the BCO plays. The core feature of this broad church membership, drawn from right across the UK, is an interest in best practice and over the past sixteen years this has enabled the BCO to produce best practice benchmarks which have improved the quality of Britain's offices, internally and externally.
Participation in this unique creative forum is the central benefit of BCO membership and the Council is organised for and managed by its members, who form its governing body, management executive, regional associations, and also staff its committees and working parties. Every member has an opportunity to be involved and an ethos on renewal, enables new members to quickly become involved in the development and direction of the organisation.
Moreover with research at the core of the BCO's mission, membership involvement in the Council's research and policy agenda is encouraged through a series of dedicated committees and groups tackling questions of sustainability, urban regeneration, technical affairs, and workplace productivity. The high level of membership participation in this activity has enabled the BCO to register a strong track record in the research field since 2001. Here members are able to lead the agenda, form research partnerships, and again press forward new ways of thinking on office design and occupation with the support of the Secretariat's research and policy team.
